URGENT
Athletes of Paris 2024 Olympics: warm dorm recovery alert.

What we know:

ISSUE

Athlete sleep/recovery is at risk due to elevated dorm temperatures

Ahead of Paris 2024, and building on the first Rings of Fire report in 2021, elite athletes from across 15 sports – including 11 Olympians – join forces with leading climate scientists and thermal physiologists to examine the serious threat extreme heat poses to competitors at the Paris Olympics:

  • The average temperature in Paris has risen by 3.1°C since 1924, the year of the last Olympics in France.

  • The UN’s prediction that 2024 is on track to the hottest year ever, and Europe is the fastest-warming continent on the planet.

  • Lord Seb Coe, President of World Athletics, warns that “with global temperatures continuing to rise, climate change should increasingly be viewed as an existential threat to sport” https://basis.org.uk/resource/rings-of-fire-2/

Paris Athlete Dorm Temperature

The athlete dorms are using a geothermal cooling system, rather than classic AC, as athletes in Paris could face the same level of sweltering heat and humidity that broiled Tokyo during the Summer Olympics there three years ago.

Paris 2024 Olympic organizing officials have said that “with the right habits, such as closing shades during the day, temperatures inside the dorms won’t exceed 79 Fahrenheit.”

Nicolas Ziesel, an architect whose firm helped design roughly one-fifth of the Village’s buildings acknowledged that any projections about indoor temperature are “super hypothetical,” given global climate change.

The athletes’ rooms have thermostats, but their utility is limited: they control the speed at which the water circulates, amounting to a difference of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit warmer or cooler, said Laurent Michaud, the director of the Olympic and Paralympic Village.

PROBLEM

Elite athletes have been shown to recover best while sleeping under 70 degrees farenheit. We have direct data showing deterioration of deep sleep quality in temperatures over 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The dorms will likely not reach lower than 70 degrees at night and even with a portable AC unit we have seen improvements in deep sleep with the addition of a water cooled mattress topper. We have NOT observed improvements with gel-type mattress toppers, as their initial cool sensation soon warms overall and does not boost deep sleep.

SOLUTION

The Chilipad water cooled mattress topper is the best, most compact, and most affordable option that we have tested to boost deep sleep. These units were used in the London Olympic Team USA dorms for athletes that we supported. Athletes saw improvements in their deep sleep using the Chilipad, thus improvements in their recovery.
